Under the hood

Under the hoodAs we already stated, we are on a mission to give you back your digital freedom!

And on the technical side, we are accomplishing this by using up2date open source software and open protocols only.

This blog entry introduces you to the foundations and features of Soldupe Cloud Services or in other words: We would like you to have a close look under the hood – Welcome to Soldupe!

At the start our services will be based on two popular open source software projects:

  • Nextcloud
  • ejabberd

Nextcloud was forked in early 2016 from ownCloud and is licensed under AGPLv3.
Despite its young age Nextcloud already received a lot of improvements during the last year. Along with this comes an absolutely awesome community support, which constantly adds new features and other improvements to Nextcloud.

Soldupe uses the following Nextcloud features / server apps:

  • File Sharing
  • Calendar
  • Contacts
  • Tasks
  • Bookmarks
  • Federated Cloud Sharing
  • Server-side encryption

Using these features, you can sync your personal data across all of your devices, while keeping full control over your data.

We are also planning to make the WebRTC video & audio call feature, that comes with Nextcloud 11, available to all Soldupe users. We are also evaluating the integration of other Nextcloud features into Soldupe – more on this later!

Besides our Soldupe mobile apps, you can use the Nextcloud mobile app (Android, iOS) or any other compatible 3rd party app like DAVdroid to access your data stored at Soldupe Cloud Services. Please have a look at our technical F.A.Q. to find out if your client software is supported by Soldupe.

Of course, you can access Soldupe through any browser, capable of understanding HTML 5 & CSS 3, too.

ejabberd is a XMPP server, which builds the backbone of our real-time communication infrastructure.
It is maintained by Process One and licensed under GPL.

ejabberd can be easily scaled and adapted, that’s why a lot of services like WhatsApp use it as foundation for their backend too – heavily modified with a lot of proprietary extensions of course. Since we dedicated ourselves to open standards only, we guarantee you that we will not implement any proprietary bullshit crap into Soldupe. Never. Ever.

ejabberd offers a lot of features, probably a bit too much to list them all here. Basically we will be offering the following XMPP features on Go-Live:

  • 1 to 1 messaging
  • Multi User Chatrooms
  • OTR Messaging

More features will be added as development continues.

Of course, all your communications with Soldupe Cloud Services are TLS encrypted.
And we are only using encryption algorithms, that are not known to be compromised!

We will update this blog post while development continues.
