Meltdown, Spectre and an outlook on 2018

Soldupe RoadmapHow was your January? Ours was great!
We spent quite some time patching our whole server infrastructure about three times. Once we finished, we had to start all over again.

In case you haven’t heard already, two newly discovered hardware bugs, with the attacks on them called Meltdown & Spectre, have hit the IT industry hard. Almost every CPU produced after 1995 is affected and the fixes for these two bugs (as far as they are already available) need to be implemented client- and server-side as well. Red Hat explains how these attacks work in this 3min video.

We implemented all patches available to us within 24hrs after they have been made publicly available. Of course, the standard procedures of testing this patches ahead in development and UAT environment were applied. But alas, the updated CPU microcode has been revoked by Intel due to probable stability issues, causing a second extra patch-cycle for us, making a total of three complete patch-cycles for us this year so far.

Gladly we didn’t experience any stability problems, but the fixes came with an impact on performance. We mitigated the loss in performance and responsiveness – if you experiencing any troubles anyway, please reach out to us through our support channels!
